Welcome to Buffett-Land

This past weekend I finally saw people in Omaha. It was the Berkshire-Hathaway shareholder meeting and there wasn’t a room in Omaha to be had.

On Friday night we went to dinner with some great new friends that we’ve met here. Their kids are the same age as ours and I am praying that they buy the lot across the street from our house! We then went to the big party that Borsheims jewelry store throws. They give an awesome 20-30% discount off all their merchandise to shareholders that weekend. Too bad we have two mortgages, so unfortunately, I went home jewel-less. I did meet a nice woman named Pamela and complimented her on her very cool, and likely very expensive looking shoes. Maybe she knew where to shop in Omaha. Unfortunately, she was from Omaha, but now lives in LA so she wasn’t much help. As Neal was ushering me away, she re-introduced herself as Pamela Buffett…. Ah yes…. I guess you meet all kinds at the Berkshire meeting….

Saturday Sophie and I got up and went to the meeting… well, I guess I should say we went to walk around the exhibits. We loaded up on Geranimals stuff, and Fruit of the Loom too. Unfortunately, they were out of the Ginsu knives when we got there. Ah, next year….

After naps Neal and the kids and I went back down to the meeting. I was shocked that this thing draws literally 27,000 people. I’ve owned many stocks in my time, but I have never even heard of a turn-out quite like that for a shareholder meeting. I guess everyone comes to hear the great Warren Buffett and I must admit he is very engaging. He’s got this very simplistic demeanor coupled with brilliance, realism and humor that makes it hard to get up and leave while he speaks. Next year I am getting a babysitter and coming for the day!

Sunday we took the girls back to Borsheims for their brunch and hopefully get a look at Buffett and Gates playing bridge. That’s their big thing… bridge. The kids were more interested in Pottery Barn Kids which was right near where the bridge table was set up so unfortunately we didn’t last long.

This was a very interesting experience for me. As everyone knows, I’m not wild about Omaha, but I was really glad that we got to experience something that is very unique to this city and has had such a significant impact. I’ll definitely be back next year!
